Leland L, managing director, GSMA ASIA
Leland is a 20-year, mobile industry veteran. He began his career as an analyst on Hutchison Telecom’s storied corporate development team, which ultimately spawned STAR-TV (sold to News Corporation) and Orange (sold to France Telecom). Leland rose to Business Development Manager in 1992 and got an historical opportunity to work on one of the world’s first GSM (back when it was called PCN - Personal Communications Network) spectrum license bid in Germany. Eight years later in Puerto Rico, as a Divisional GM, Leland restructured an Alcatel-ITT spinoff with an ailing MVNO business and positioned it for IPO as part of eOn Communications (Nasdaq: ENOC). Between 2004 and 2007, he held various senior executive roles at Terayon Communication, spearheaded the company’s DVB-H trial with PCCW, and closed a groundbreaking deal involving mobile ad insertion with Qualcomm MediaFLO. After Motorola acquired Terayon for $140M and before joining GSMA in 2010, Leland consulted for one of the world’s largest smart phone makers on a project with China Unicom and led an engagement for a China Mobile VAS. Leland holds an MBA from the Anderson Graduate School of Management at UCLA and a BS in mechanical engineering from UCLA. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps and is a FAA licensed pilot and an ASA certified bareboat captain
